The Little Reindeer Hat

IMG_7274-2With Christmas upon us, I wanted to make something for my boys to wear that was a little festive.  The other day, I was watching them play so nicely with each other, they were pretending to be Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer and Frosty the Snowman… and that gave me an idea!!  I decided to make them a reindeer hat (and a snowman hat too.  The snowman hat pattern will be posted soon) complete with red nose!  This is an easy double crochet hat that will fit a child between the age of 4-12.

 Materials needed

Worsted weight (4) cotton yarn in 5 colours (Brown, Tan, Red, White, and Black)
H/8 – 5.00mm hook
G/6 – 4.25mm hook
Chain marker
Tapestry needle

Gauge

12 dc and 8 rows = 4 inch square

Abbreviations

Rnd = round
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet
dc = double crochet
st = stitch
sts = stitches
slst = slip stitch
dec = decrease
sc2tog = single crochet 2 together
dc2tog = double crochet 2 together

Special Instructions

Sc2tog: insert hook into next stitch as called for in your pattern; yarn over and pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).  Insert hook into next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).  Yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

Dc2tog: yarn over and insert hook into next stitch.  Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).  Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (2 loops left on your hook).  Now yarn over again and insert hook into the next stitch and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).  Yarn over and pull through 2 loops (3 loops left on your hook), now yarn over and pull through all 3 loops.

Here is a photo tutorial of how to sc2tog and dc2tog.

How to change the colour of yarn working in sc rounds:  Start by making a sc as you would normally… insert hook, pull up a loop, there should be 2 loops on your hook, but now use the new colour to pull through both loops on hook.  Here is a photo tutorial of how to do this.

*Ending round chains do not count as a stitch now or throughout the pattern unless specified.  Do not slst into the chain, instead slst into the first sc, hdc or dc as called for in the pattern.

**Please read the entire pattern first before attempting to make this hat.  This pattern has not yet been tested, if there are any problems or issues; please let me know in the comments below or by sending me a message at nyelasnook@gmail.com .  Thank you!
